Senate Confirms First Black Woman and Former Public Defender to the United States Supreme Court

On April 7, 2022, the United States Senate voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as an Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Justice Jackson is not only the first black woman to serve on the Court, she is also the first former public defender to serve on the Court. Judge Jackson will replace Justice Stephen Breyer. “100% percent of my time was devoted to the disadvantaged,” Justice Jackson wrote of her time as a public defender. In confirmation proceedings related to her appointment to the federal bench Justice Jackson noted: “In order to guarantee liberty and justice for all, the government has to provide due process to the individuals it accuses of criminal behavior, including the rights to... competent legal counsel.” The Office of the Public Defender celebrates this historic confirmation.
